Words have the Power to Heal!

According to Dr. Daniel J. Siegel, author of Mindsight, using words to describe and label your internal world can actually be useful for right-left brain integration and balance.  The right hemisphere tends to be associated to the emotion-generting areas and because of this it makes sense that “linking the right and left modes through the left-hemisphere function of language might bring about the necessary balance.  Indeed, studies done at UCLA have actually shown that naming an affect soothes limbic firing.”  So the next time you are raging or angry, rather than noting “I am so angry” try describing it like “I feel so angry”.  You might notice an ability to regulate your emotions that you didn’t know you had.  What could your world be like with more emotional navigation?
